JUNE

It was June 3, 1988, and Westside Elementary School's Noemi De La Rosa's third-grade Spanish class were learning a few new words before the last day of school.

A Springstead High School graduating class has no problem tossing their caps into the air during the June15, 1988 ceremony in the school's football field.

Making his way through the slide tube on the playground at Delta Woods Park, John O'Neill of Spring Hill was 12-years old at this time on June 19, 1991. His shadowed friend above was Danny Hurley, who was 10.


Watching her hamburgers slip through a wide-grated grill at Delta Wood Park, (right) Christy Burchfield was 16 when she learned a lesson in th art of barbecueing. On June 19, 1989 she realized she forgot the aluminum foil.

Visiting from Chicago, Glen Morris, Jr. was just three-years old when he took to the shower at Pine Island's Alfred A. McKethan Park. He was visiting relatives at the Brookridge subdivision on  June 20, 1987

 

Driving their golf cart through the new tunnel under Mariner Blvd. Don Heddon of Brooksville and Doug Kjos of Crystal River make their way from the east side to the west side of the new Seven Hills Golfers Club, June 23, 1989.  

Nothing was going to stop Springstead High School graduate Mickey Vore from receiving his diploma on June 12, 1987.

Cameron Audette, then 15-months old tries pushing the button on the Delta Woods Park lion's head fountain. He was at the park with his parents, Ed and Donna Audette on June 30, 1991.

After severe coastal flooding from the No-Name Storm in March, a group of musicians put togrether the band,  "Flash Flood".  By June 19, 1993, the band's popularity soared.

Spring Hill's first teen nightclub, Sponges opened on Countyline Rd. Were you there?  June 9,1995

He wasn't the great James Brown. He was was his cousin, Little Royal. It was standing room only at Secrets nightclub, June 25, 1993. Were you there? 

The Jenkins Creek observation tower begins to take shape in June 1994.

A growing group of Spring Hill residents made a daily pilgrimmage to Pine Island's Alfred A. McKethan Park. Claiming the warm salt water was beneficial, Dave Dinwoody, Sr. and others were known as the 'Bobbing Head Society, June 7, 1992.

The Hernando County Port Authority sank tons of old concrete culverts in the Gulf of Mexico to create artificial reefs on 6/11/1992.


JULY

Artist Chuck Russo, also known as El Rosso was ahead of the times as he crafted foam sculptures at his hardware store in Masaryktown July 3, 1992.

It was a dream come true for then-four-year-old, Lauren Weiss of Spring Hill. Mermaid Laura Valentine made an appearance at a benefit for Chuck Hackney at Western Way Plaza. It was July 21, 1990. 

The Weeki Wachee Spring Attraction Underwater mermaid show underwent some changes when new owners, Florida Leisure Acquisitions made some changes. The 'deep dive' show was replaced with more underwater ballet and acrobatics. A crowd looks on July 2, 1989.

At the West Hernando Public Library, Nicole Schuler was looking for a title that would catch her eye. It was part of incentive to get children to read more on July 19, 1987.

Valdora Ward of Brooksville was on hand to paint faces at a benefit for Chuck Hackney, a lifeguard who had a water slide accident at Buccaneer Bay where he worked. It was July 21, 1990.

Despite early morning showers. Hernando County Lifeguard Lori Fitzpatrick was at her post at Alfred A. McKethan Park on July 7, 1986.

Joey Pierce of Brooksville, then 8-years old, shows his special style running a sack race at the Freedom Fest event held at the Hernando County Fairgrounds. on July 4, 1991. 

A thirsty Matthew Diegert, then-three-years-old, gets a helping hand from his cousin, Summer Homesley, who was then three. The two were trying to quench their thirst in the mouth of the lion's head water fountain at Delta Woods Park, July 30, 1990.

Football in July? Brooksville-Central High School's #32 Cleve Pope got the running room he needed to run in a touchdown against Crystal River High School during a summer game at Brooksville's Tom Fisher Stadium on July 8, 1991.

 

Dexter Brown of Brooksville emerges from knee-deep water, after scouring the Gulf's floor looking for shells. He was a camper at Camp Funshine during a visit to Pine Island's Alfred A. McKethan Park July 3, 1991.

AUGUST

Gary Lee Harris of Spring Hill was 3 when he and his cousin, April Abbey of Hudson ducked for shelter during a downpour at Alfred A. McKethan Park on Pine Island August 2, 1987.

Left-hander, Pat Notarione of Spring Hill practices to qualify to compete in the 1st Annual Spring Hill Lanes P.B.A. Southern Regional tournament. It was August 4, 1989.

Steve Cook, a Springstead High School 10th-grader at the time finds a way to hold his sheet music while playing the quads during band camp practice on August 9, 1991. 

Truman McLean was just 10-months old when he and his mom, Vicki McLean of

Spring Hill had the day to themselves on August 8, 1987. A great day for the beachat Alfred A. McKethan Park.

During a visit to Spring Hill, while visiting her grandfather John Holmlund, then-7-years old, Erin-Ann Edwards from, Wantagh, New York, her mom Pat, sister Colleen and her brother, John spent the day at Delta Woods Park on August 6, 1991.

With intense concentration, Carmelita Stewart, then a junior at Springstead High School, follows the direction of band director, Richard Dasher, as she and others go over a new musical piece during band camp on August 7, 1991.

Trail and Painters St. Jill started second grade at Westside Elementary School on August 26, 1987.

Joann Munford of AmeriCorps Hernando County was having just as much fun as the children were having during Field Day games on Summit Road in Brooksville on August 19, 1995.

Winston, the Wonder Dog gets an earful from stand-up comedian, Earl Burke of Seattle, Washington. The two were in Spring Hill for a performance at Reflections Nightclub in Spring Hill. Burke was champion of Ed McMahon's Star Search. It was August 19, 1991

Christina Marie Hamilton was just two years old when she sat down in the driver's seat of a 1925 American La France fire engine that was on display at the Heritage Museum in Brooksville on August 29, 1987.

Bobby Roth, then an 11th-grader at Springstead High School practices playing the tuba during a lunch break at band camp on August 8, 1991.

 

SEPTEMBER


Tasha was an 8-month-old Pitbull and had no problem on the bow of Salem Le Fils boat as they cruised down the Weeki Wachee River on September 3, 1988. 

Eastside Elementary School student, Tommy Walker was 5 years old when he and his classmates were preparing to plant bush beans in the school's garden. The class planted several different types of vegetables on September 6, 1990.

Call it bow-wow blessings, as (left) Father Richard Melli from the Chapel of the Holy Spirit in The Oaks, blesses a Poodle named, 'Mickey' owned by then-13-year-old, Jennifer Simone. Looking on was Marc Surak, then 15 years old. Marc's mom, Linda Surak holds her Poodle named, 'Buffy' during the Hernando County SPCA's Pet Blessings in Spring Hill on September 29, 1990.

Jason Carter, John Sessa and Don Milkiewicz were Boy Scouts with Troop 303 when they took part in the fundraiser car wash at Bender's Chevron Station. Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus/ St. Jude 6383 the troop raised enough money for camping gear and a camping trip. It was September 18, 1986.

Powell Middle School's Casey Tibbs was 12 years old when the bus he and other students were riding in was struck by a pickup truck in Spring Hill. Students were waiting for the highway patrol to arrive before another bus was dispatched. There were no injuries on September 2, 1987.

Janice Lin was just 10 years old when she participated in the Spring Hill Elementary School Friday Night Prime Time event. It was September 28, 1990. 


Dominic Teti of Spring Hill was just 3 years old when he discovered the fun in making sand pies while on the beach at Alfred A. McKethan Park in Pine Island. Dominic was at the beach that day with his sister, Tiffany Teti, who was 4 at the time and stepbrother Joseph Riva, who was then 13. They were there with Lauren Teti of Spring Hill. It was September 18, 1989. 

David Hamilton, Jr. was just 2 years old when he was able to fit into the center of a 25-inch rim of monster truck, 'Thumper', a 4x4 truck owned by Earl Dagit of Holiday. The large truck later put on a car-crushing show in Brooksville on September 27, 1987.
